Yorke Island

Yorke Island is also known as Masig.

Like most of the islands in the central Torres Strait, it is a coral cay island.

Located in the eastern end of the central group,

... it is larger than the other cays like Warraber and Poruma.

Cute Streets

It takes twice as long to walk around,

yorke island pier

... but you can walk around it along the beaches.

And like on the other central islands, there are the cute,

masig island streets

... narrow streets,

masig island street

... lined by coconut palms and frangipani trees.

And some of these take you to places you can start the beach walk.

Beach Walk - Eastern Half of Yorke Island

Because the island is morre than twice the size of Poruma,

yorke island beach

... I did two walks,

yorke island beach walk

... one around the eastern,

yorke island northern beach

... and one around the western half of the island.

yorke island beach north

The island is teardrop shaped,

masig island beach

... so the eastern half is thinner than the western.

And another thing that is different with this island,

masig island kondall island

... is that there is one more island in the eastern end!

masig island north beach

Approaching it from the northern beach, walking east,

masig island beach north

... and when you get to the eastern end of Masig Island,

yorke island kondall island

... you come so close to it that on the low tide, and with the sandbar between,

kondall island

... it seems that you can walk across,

yorke island north east

... and its name is Kondall Island.

masig island north east

The eastern point of Yorke Island ...

yorke island east point

... is pretty sharp, there is a timber seat,

masig island east point

... and on the other side is the southern beach.

yorke island east point mangroves

... with mangroves, and the views back to Kondall Island.

yorke island east point and kondall island

The southern beach is very strait,

masig island east point mangroves

... much straighter than the northern one,

yorke island south east

... so you can see much farther,

masig island south east

... pretty much to the end of it.

The southern beach has debris as opposed to the northern one,

yorke island south beach

... it has more palm trees ...

masig island south beach

... casuarinas,

yorke island southern beach

... and generally thicker vegetation than the northern one.

Beach Walk - Western Half of Yorke Island

The western side of Masig Island I did on a different day,

yorke island southern beach walk

... in the afternoon to catch the sunset,

masig island southern beach walk

... as the western side is longer,

yorke island south west

... round as opposed to the eastern, pointy end,

masig island south west

... and takes longer to walk.

yorke island south west beach

On the southern side,

masig island south west beach

... there is more debris,

yorke island south west beach walk

... driftwood, shells and seagrass,

masig island south west beach walk

... and in the western end,

masig island western end

... the sun sets.

yorke island western end

There were also a lot of large, red, jellyfish,

yorke island west point

... and - turtle tracks!

masig island western point

The tracks are a seasonal thing and the time was right: October - November.

yorke island west point turtle tracks

The female turtle goes up from the water to make a nest,

yorke island turtle tracks yorke island turtle island turtle tracks

... puts the eggs in and returns to the water.

masig island west point turtle tracks

There are therefore always two tracks for each tim - one of her way up, and the other one, down the beach.

Once past the western end,

yorke island north west

... soon the pier is visible.

masig island north west

The northern side has a cleaner beach,

yorke island jetty

... but there are still the shells,

masig island pier

... plenty of activities around the pier,

yorke island wharf

... and the sunset is just beautiful.

masig island wharf

It gets dark quite quickly after the sun sets,

yorke island sunset

... and the rest of the walk goes past some bushy vegetation,

yorke island evening walk

... boats and kids in the water,

masig island evening walk

... having the last swim before darkness.
