Tyre advice?

by Anton

Just wanted some informed advice on tyre choices for the cape.

I'm planning a trip to the cape via the Tele track in late Aug and currently run split rims with Dunlop Road Grippers on my 100 series.

Each time i visit a tyre dealer i get conflicting advice with some saying they will be fine and others basically saying don't even attempt it unless i have an aggressive tyre with a safety rim.

Would be interested to hear what you think??

Hi Anton,

You get different advice because it's not easy to estimate and even if someone has the experience from the particular tracks, it still depends on what exact weather (rain) and road conditions they had, also obviously what other equipment they had on their vehicle (diffs etc), apart from the tyres.

Often the most critical part when it comes to tyres is getting out of the creek crossings, where the exit is often under the water and slippery, so you need the grip. We run all terrain tyres (60% road 40% mud) for that extra grip, but did also have pretty worn-out tyres one year (when we actually did quite a few tracks) and we were fine.

All i can say, you'll probably be fine, late August is usually quite dry, creek waters are down, not much rain, but just don't take my word, because it's impossible to say for sure.

If you do want to feel confident about your gear during your trip, so you can have fun instead of having to worry about your tyres, it may not be a bad idea to invest in a set of all terrainers and use them again on any future four wheel drive trips after the Cape.

Thank you
