Hi Katrin

Heading to Cape York from Tassie July 2013.

Just want some info about Somerset, and camping on the beach at Somerset.

Is it one night only or can you camp for a week.

And do you have a price per night.

Hi Tony,

Somerset is basically not more than the ruins of an old homestead, and the beach.

It was the first settlement at the tip of Cape York - the former home of Frank Jardine - a man who's often mentioned in Cape York history. He came up here from Rockhampton after his dad was sent here in the 1860s to settle as the Government resident. The adminsitration of Torres Strait was here until 1877 when it was moved to Thursday Island. Frank ended up running the place until he died in 1919. His and his wife's graves are on the Somerset Beach. Some of their kids lived in the house until they had to leave due to the Second World War.

Sadly the place burned down in the 1960s and not so much remains, except some ruins and some fruit trees that must have been their plantation. There are also some WWII cannons, a grave, and more graves down on the beach. In the eastern end of the beach, behind mangroves, is a well - the homestead's water supply.

The beach is beautiful and as far as i know you can stay how long you want, the price is $20 per night per vehicle. How long you last will depend on your luck with sandflies - some years i have had no sandflies at all, other years they have been so bad that i have moved on and not even camped there (the sandfly luck can change from day to day depending on winds and other factors as you probably know).

You're in for a great trip!!!
