OTT, Iron Range, Captain Billy Landing

OTT, Iron Range, Captain Billy Landing

by Jill

Hi Katrin,

We're planning a trip from Brisbane to the Tip in the June/July school holidays. We're taking 3 weeks as we're limited for time with the kids schooling. We're only stopping to camp on the OTT at Elliot Falls. Do you think one camp stop is enough? We are doing a side trip to Chilli Beach but I've recently been told that it is a very hard road in for a not very nice but windy camp spot when you get there.

Do you think we should alter our itinery and miss Chilli Beach and spend more time on the OTT? Or alternatively should we swap Chilli Beach for Captain Billy's Landing?

I appreciate any advice. So few people I know have been to this part of the country that's it's hard to find people to talk to to get travelling advice from and I really want to experience the best the cape has to offer.

Hi Jill,

If you really want to make the most of what Cape York has to offer, the best thing you can do is to spend $27 and buy the guide written by a local – it is a tiny amount of money to make sure you make the most of the big dollars that you will spend on the trip regardless ;-)

By reading it you find out which places suit you, it’s hard for me to recommend because everyone is different.

Personally I don’t think the road into Iron Range is hard at all, and if I had to make the choice I would prefer Iron Range to Captain Billy Landing (which is just as windy by the way, depending on the day).

Iron Range is famous as a unique Cape York rainforest with chances to see some unique birds and animals, but for people with no special interest in nature could be a disappointment if they don’t see how this is different from all other rainforests in Australia. There are more camp spots than Chili Beach, there are some in the rainforest, but to actually spot some unique birds and animals you’d have to stay longer than one night and do at least half serious spotlighting and birdwatching.

The OTT is a good idea to spend time on, yet most people don’t spend more than one night, too excited to get to the Tip as soon as possible.

With three weeks you won’t have a lot of time so you want to plan right for every day .. There is more about the length of the trip in the FREE pocket guide in case you don’t already have one :-)
