One month enough to do Cape York?

One month enough to do Cape York?

by Shannon

Hi i am planning a trip to the Cape next year with my uncle.

I have a 4x4 Landcruser and will be self sufficient.

Route planned as follows

Cape Trib, Bloomfield Track to Cooktown.

Battle Camp Road to Laura or Lakefield National Park and then Musgrave Roadhouse, turn to Port Stewart.

Lockhart River, Portland Roads, Iron Range, then Weipa then the Old Telegraph Track to the Jardine River then to the Tip. We will also stop at Falls.

We are allowing one month to do the trip.

Do you think this is a good route and doable in time frame?

Awesome web site very helpful.

Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the kind words :-)

Sounds like a great plan, and yes doable in a month - although you won't get to stay in places for ages you do get it all done quite comfortably in a month.

You could probably even get in more - as i say in my free pocket guide, what you get in does not only depend on the time frame you have but of course also how well you use that time to get around.

Advice.. Instead of driving in to Port Stewart and back for example, you could do the Running Creek Track and the Old Coen Track - both great four wheel drive tracks that save you driving the same road (to Port Stewart) twice.

And another one - Frenchman's Track. Instead of going into Iron Range, Portland Roads and Lockhart River on your way up and driving the main road in and out, you could do it on a loop with Frenchmans Track on your way back down from the Tip (that direction is better due to the steepness of Wenlock River bank on that track - you better going down it than trying to get up).

And that's about what you get into a month.. depending on what pace you like you could also get in Cape Melville (again doable without having to drive the same road twice if you combine it with the Starcke - Wakooka Track) but that is making your time frame tight. (also Cape Melville opens later than many other places, some years not earlier than in August).

And maybe a day trip to Thursday Island from Seisia!?

If you get more questions don't hesitate to get back to me.

If not, have a great trip!!
