The furtherest that you can go is to the tip of Cape York car park. North of Bamaga there is a creek and during the wet season the road can be challenging in a 4wd. There are a fair few dips with water before the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) as well so the later in the dry season the less water will be an issue.

I personally know of a mazda CX7 which is all wheel drive that came up here and had a repair bill of 9500 dollars and most of the sedans and soft all wheel drives seem to suffer a lot of damage - even when driven carefully. Lots of places aren't accessible by all wheel drive with no clearance or 2wd vehicles - so this limits the amount of places that you can visit.

I highly recommend the best roadside assistance and insurance

In your experience, how would a Subaru Forrester cope in the dry season?

We are thinking about pulling an A-van with a Forrester - is this possible?

Hi Sandy,
by: Katrin

Yes, you'd be fine in a Forrester in the Dry season.

If it pulls your van in other places, it should also do it here.

do you think I can take Discovery sports to Cape town in 1-2 week of April?

Cape York :)

Hi Prabh,
by: Katrin

Ok i wasn't sure whether Cooktown or Cape York :-)

You can technically take it all the way to the tip of Cape York, during the Dry season.

Would i recommend - depends on how much you care if you get damage - even if nothing else then from little rocks leaving marks on your car body and windscreen (and the scenario could be much worse).

There are still many, many hundreds of kilometres of unsealed road (the PDR that is gradually getting sealed is the road to Weipa - not to the Tip).

Sorry I missed you said April
by: Katrin

April is not a Dry Season month, so - no, i would not make a plan for that month in any vehicle.

You could get away in a proper four wheel drive if it happened to be a dry April, but you dont know what the April will be like until it's here, plus it is also still cyclone season - so it is still a very risky month to make any plans for.

What time is best and worst for Cape York, month by month, is in the "When to Go" chapter in the FREE Pocket Guide.

Hi Subaru xv,
by: Katrin

Yes, it would :-)

Hi 2005 Mazda tribute,
by: Katrin

Yes, it would do it :-)

Hi Alex,
by: Katrin

Yes, a Mazda CX-5 would do it to the Tip if you took it easy due to relatively low clearance.

Hi MAZDA cx5,
by: Katrin

Yes, it would do it to Weipa if you drove to the conditions on the corrugations.

AWD 2020 Rav 4 to the Cape?
by: Anonymous

Just curious if a 2020 Rav 4 AWD would make it to the Cape? Later in the dry obviously.

Hi 2020 Rav 4 AWD
by: Katrin

Along the main road, yes - but not the 4WD tracks.

Colorado 2wd high lift

How far would be ok in a colorado 2wd hi lift

Hi Colorado 2wd high lift,
by: Katrin

You can get to the Tip in the dry season, being a 2wd you would shake it on the corrugations more than a 4wd.

2000 Honda CR-V
by: Miranda

Hey, would a 2000 Honda CR-V make it to Cape York? We want to go to the tip at the end of July/beginning of August.

Hi Miranda,
by: Katrin

Yes it will do the main road to the Tip in the dry season, but i would not take it to the 4WD tracks.
