Darnley Island

Darnley Island is also known as Erub.

Like typical of the islands in the eastern group, it is an island of volcanic origin.

It means most of the island is taken up by uninhabited land,

... while in the southern end are the communities.

Town and Art Centre

The communities - or is it one - it is very spread out in different sections along the southern and south western coast of the island.

darnley island streets

The streets are not quite as narrow as on the central islands, but are nice and colourful,

erub island street

... and lined by palm trees.

There are some nice community beaches,

... both south east and south west,

... and the hub is where there is a church,

... and the wharf area,

erub island wharf

... with the pier,

darnley island pier

... and the barge ramp.

erub island pier

There is a walk up the hill,

... with nice views over the sunset,

... and the pier area is still lively after the darkness.

Darnley is most famous for its arts centre,

erub island art centre

... that is full of amazing art indeed.

Particularly known for its ghost net art,

... where ghost nets from the ocean are beautifully recycled ...

... by being turned into amazing art creations ...

Drive East and North of Darnley Island

The second thing that the locals will mention is the Coming of the Light site.

darnley island drive

It is on the northern side of the island,

erub island drive

... so the opposite side of the communities (which are in the south).

darnley island road

It is a nice drive,

erub island road

... first along the sealed road,

darnley island track

... through varying vegetation,

darnley island views

... with views,

erub island track

... and up and down the hill,

darnley island north

... until it descends down to the northern beach ...

... to the Coming of the Light site.

darnley island road to coming of the light

It's down on a beautiful beach,

... with pandanus palms and ...

... nice views in each direction.

darnley island coming of the light beach

It was here that in 1871,

... the London Missionary Society arrived on the vessel L. M. S. Surprise,

... to introduce Christianity to Darnley (and other Torres Strait Islands),

darnley island coming of the light monument

... and it is here as the 1. July Coming of the Light celebration is held every year.

Other Tracks in the East of Darnley Island

On the way back to the community,

darnley island east drive

... there are tracks off the main road,

darnley island other tracks

... that go to beaches,

darnley island eastern beach

... a sports complex and other places,

... before getting back to the southern coast and the community.

Drive West and Centre of Darnley Island

There are also tracks from the community,

darnley island up the hill

.. to the central and western parts of the island.

erub island views

Some start behind the Art Centre ...

... and go up the hill,

darnley island central parts

... to the central parts.

erub island hills

They criss-cross much of the central parts of the island,

... and even go another way to the road to the Coming of the Light site (and the airport).

When they go up the hill,

... there are some great views,

... over the blue waters,

darnley island down the hill

... as always in the Torres Strait.

Past the school,

... and Telecom Tower, which they only got a few years ago.

erub island western views

... (as of late 2018, most islands still had no tower, meaning almost no mobile phone recepion).

darnley island western parts

A track goes down to a beach, on this, south-western side.

darnley island western beach

It's beautiful and rocky,

darnley island west beach

... with nice views over the water,

... and very peaceful.

erub island west beach

These, eastern islands,

erub island west drive

... you cannot walk the way you walk the central coral cays.

erub island western hills

They are too big, hilly, and have no continuous beach,
so you need a car to get around.
