Cape York trip in early May, 2 boats

by Tyrone peters
(Townsville)

Hi there,

We are planning a trip with 4 people and 2 well set up 4wd both towing 4.4m tinnys, we are hoping to leave townsville early May and reach cottrell river 400kms north of Wiepa, is this to early of the year for this trip.

I understand that the wet season is always changing but as an average would it be worth the risk.

Thankyou

Hi Tyrone,
by: Katrin

Every year is different, one thing is how wet has the wet season been, but the other thing is also the recent weather.

Even in the end of the dry wet season that we had this year, would the late May rains have stuffed your plans - so, yes, it is risky to plan a trip to early May as this time of the year the changes can happen quickly and the whole situation is a lot more unpredictable than later in the season.

You might be ok on a good year, but you might not, and if you get your trip stuffed in the last minute or even get stranded and don't get back in time, you would save a lot of hassle and disappointment by planning the trip no earlier than early June.
