Cape York in October?

Cape York in October?

by Dave Thompson
(New Zealand)

Hi. We are New Zealanders. We are planning a trip to Cape York in the first two weeks of October.

There will be 4 of us in the vehicle and we plan on using accommodation rather than camping.

We plan to get the coastal ship from Cairns to Bamaga and then staying at the top for a few days.

We then plan to drive back stopping at Bramwell Junction, Weipa, Coen, Laura and Cooktown.

We have a new Colorado 4x4. Your previous advise to others was October was a good month to visit.

What road conditions will we experience in October and how many kilometres per hour can we expect to average? Any other advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Do you have the Free Pocket Guide?

Every month is discussed there in quite a detail, the upside of October is that you skip the crowds, the downside is that the climate will be hot.

The upside about the roads is that the water levels will be down, so the creek crossings are about as dry as they get, but the downside is that corrugations are big, after the season's traffic has been through.

All in all i think October is a great month as long as you can stand the heat, as i think Cape York is best experienced without the crowds.

All the accommodation and detailed info about Bramwell Junction, Weipa, Coen, Laura and Cooktown is in the Destination Guide.

How many kilometres per hour is not so easy to estimate, but you should be able to do 80-100km/h in October because the conditions are dry.

That is if you want to go that quick, again more info on that subject too in the Free Pocket Guide.
