The wife and I are planning to leave beginning of April to visit the Cape.

This will put us in Cairns around middle of April what do you think this a little early or keep to that date kind regards Alan.

In April 2010 i was sitting with bags packed, waiting for the roads to open, and the main road up didn't open until early June. That was extreme, it does not happen often, but you know the possibility exists, and our wet seasons are incredibly unpredictable.

In April-May, the later you plan the better your chances that the main road will be open at least. I discuss the subject of when to go, and outline the pros and cons of every month in my pocket guide, if you didn't get it yet, it's FREE.

But yes, i would plan a bit later if you can, or at least have a plan B just in case.
