Cape Melville in July?

by Debra
(Australia)

Hi Katrin

We are travelling up to Cape this July 2013 and was looking at going to Cape Melville on the way back south.

Have you any info on Kalpowar recreation Reserve.

(it seems the roads and camping area in the NP are closed till August).

Your site has been very helpfull.

thanks Debra

Hi Debra,

Thanks :-)

Kalpowar Recreation Reserve is on the way to Bathurst Head, and both that and the final track to Cape Melville may well be closed until August. Same for the track south from Wakooka.

The rest - the main roads through Lakefield National Park, and the road between Musgrave and Wakooka, are a bit bigger roads and usually open earlier, but the last bits into Bathurst Head and Cape Melville you may not get in before August.

That said everything depends on the recent weather, particularly the amount of rain, and as soon as a road is driveable, they open it.

So on a good year you may get in earlier if the weather has been dry, but that's one thing that is impossible to predict and that's why they just say "until August", because that's the latest when it really should open.

If i was you i'd plan it in, have a plan B in case they are closed, and see if it's open by the time you get there (if not plan to go through Lakefield National Park for example, and Battle Camp Road).
