Cape Bedford
Cape
Bedford makes a fun day out.
You can do it on a day trip from, say Cooktown,
... or you could camp at Eddie's at Elim Beach.
Either way, it's a great day out, if you like going to places :-)
After the Eddie's Campground at Elim Beach,
... the track continues east.
There is a little bit of soft sand,
... a few mud holes,
Pole House and Boggy Hill
Then the track turns to the beach,
... there are a few shacks like everywhere in the areas north of Cooktown,
... they are getaway camps owned by locals.
As you get to the beach,
... there is some soft sand,
... crocodile warning signs,
... and the track continues.
Next thing you come to the pole house,
... sea views of of the tabletop mountain of Cape Bedford,
... and right after, the track turns away from the coast.
Then there is a hill,
... where the track has some boggy sections,
... and once over the hill, there are views,
... and soon you start seeing the ocean on the other side.
There are tracks that go east to take you to the South and North Cape Bedford,
... or you have the choice to not to turn off,
... which first takes you to the southern beach,
... past a lagoon,
... and a creek mouth.
Southern Beach
On the beach, 
... there are views of South Cape Bedford,
... and you can drive,
... like we did,
... past beach treasures and driftwood,
... trees shaped by the wind,
... flocks of seabirds, and more driftwood.
After a while, there are views of the (north) Cape Bedford,
... as the southern one gets closer and closer.
In the end there are palm trees and mangroves,
... and you can drive off the beach.
South Cape Bedford
The track first passes through some bush, 
... with some pandanus palms,
... and a gate,
... and then starts climbing up,
... as you are getting to the South Cape Bedford.
Those bare hills get very steep,
... and there is hardly a car length of room to turn around,
... so if you are scared of heights, don't go up there.
The Old Mission Site
Back down, 
... there is a track ...
... to the old mission site,
... and the swamp in the middle,
... that can still be wet after the wet season.
And then, there is the track to the east, to the eastern beach.
Eastern Beach and Cape Bedford
It comes out to a beautiful spot, 
... with coastal views,
... pandanus,
... screw palms,
... and the views of the tabletop mountain of the actual (sometimes also called the northern) Cape Bedford.
There are tracks to the eastern, coastal side of it,
... as well as the other, western side of it,
... through a swamp,
... an area with mangroves,
... and tracks up to the western side of the hill,
... with views of beautiful sunsets.
