Boigu Island

Along with Aubusi and Moimi, Boigu Island is one of the Talbot Islands.

While Saibai is the one closest to the PNG coast,

Boigu is the northernmost inhabited island in the Torres Strait.

After Saibai, it is the fifth largest of all of the Torres Strait islands.

Eastern Boigu Island

Like Saibai, Boigu is a low lying island formed by PNG river sediments deposited in the bottom of the sea.

Like Saibai, most of the island is coastal mangroves and inland swamps, with the community in the northern end.

Being low, it is prone to floods so the location of the community is on the highest ground.

In the eastern end of the community, there is a river mouth with mangroves,

boigu island church

... the coming of the light monument, and a beautiful church.

Western Boigu Island

In the western end of the community,

... is another lot of mangroves, and the cemetery.

Central Boigu Island

In the centre, apart from the cute streets and friendly locals,

.. is the pier,

boigu island barge ramp

... the barge ramp,

boigu island boat ramp

... and the boat ramp.

boigu png treaty villages

Like Saibai, Boigu islanders have close ties with Papua New Guinea that is only 6km across the water.

boigu png treaty village people

The Papuans from the Treaty Villages in PNG can get permits to cross the border,

... and they come over regularly to do trading and sell their products at the markets.

They are very friendly and so easy to make friends with.
