Annan River

Annan River is quite a large river south of Cooktown.

It starts near Shiptons Flat south of Helenvale,

... and runs past Lions Den Hotel and Black Mountain National Park to the coast where it mouths just south of Cooktown.

Annan River Boating

The best place to access it is around the old Big Annan River Bridge - once one of the largest of its kind in Australia.

Fishing is very popular here, and there is a boat ramp just east of the bridge.

You cannot get through under the bridge other than at low tide.

But you can go boating any time to the other side.

There are some great looking mangroves,

... crocodiles (those often happen so quick it's hard to get a good pic unless you constantly hold the camera in your hand, but below is one - if you look carefully you can see a croc, racing, half way into the water on the photo below);

... great fishing from the boat.

... and not bad mud crabbing.

You can go all the way to the mouth of the river.

The river comes out to Walkers Bay south of Cooktown.
