Hi everyone,
It's been a shock to get rains in October,
which is supposed to be our driest month when we usually struggle with
fires, not thunderstorms.
Whether that is an early Wet Season or just a one-off event, it will have some impact once the
season really arrives.

RAINS
IN OCTOBER
This
is actually how it used to be.
It used to be that the
early Wet Season thunderstorms started in October, but for
the last 10 years it hasn't been the case.

Storm clouds building over Kendall River Road.
It was something I definitely didn't count on when doing my yearly trip
for the updates, as last
year for example we didn't have a drop of rain before the day after
Christmas.

Rains on the PDR.
The weather predictions reported it more as a one-off pattern that was
meant to hit further south but somehow ended up here, so chances are that this event will
completely disappear and not return until the seasonal
thunderstorms start.

Roadsides in Oyala Thumotang national park.
But even if that is the case and it won't rain again for another month,
the ground has had its
first saturation from fairly heavy rains.
It will decrease its capacity to take in water and make the creeks and rivers to go
up quicker once the seasonal rains are here.
LAST
EVENTS OF THE SEASON
As the
travelling season is
wrapping up, there
are not many events left.

Cooktown Races.
This time of the year - in
October and November, there are quite a lot of events in Cooktown
- hog hunt, rodeo, barra comp, and races, which is coming up
next.
