SKARDON
RIVER TO CLOSE FOR MINING
One of our
favourite spots - Skardon
River, on the north
western coast of the peninsula - will be closed for mining from
the next year.
It will be closed for something like 20 years - so if you still want to
do it before it shuts, the rest of this year is the time to do it!
Sorry
that
the wrong-doers have made this needing a mention: These newsletters are subject to

While the news itself is not super fresh, it's been confirmed
that the camping spots will still be open
until this season runs out - full
detail about permits and all is in the Destination Guide :-)
PDR
ROAD REPORT
Below is a report of the
PDR (which is the road from Lakeland to Weipa, not to the Tip!) from a little earlier this month.

Starting from the north, the Weipa
end was bad with corrugations.

From Bamaga turnoff to
Archer River Roadhouse the road was almost completely sealed,
except two small sections in the southern end, where there were
roadworks.

Archer to Coen
is always a bad section,
and was horrible with
heavy corrugations and dust holes.

Coen to Musgrave started off good - newly sealed first,
and then a graded section, but half
way down started getting more corrugated, and dusty -
which that section always is.

Musgrave to Laura was
very bad all the way, with major corrugations and dust
holes, and roadworks in the southern end.
All in all the worst sections were - this, plus Coen to Archer and the
Weipa end.
COMING EVENTS
There are a
few events still happening, even though the season is
coming to its end.

All are always in the Destination Guide, on
the above photo is the Lizard Island Marlin Classic 2014 in Cooktown :-)
