Cape York News #044 - PDR Updates, Dog Info in the Destination Guide
February 12, 2016

Hi everyone,

So we are back from a second trip to Cairns, and I thought I would update the PDR conditions because first hand info is always the best one.

Also now that we have two dogs that we will be travelling with, there will be more dog info to come over the time - but for starters I have put a dog chapter into the Destination Guide.

In This Issue

• PDR Updates

• Dog Info in the Destination Guide

• Feedback Always Welcome

Mark my partner had to go down to Cairns, so off we went late last week, and came back a few days ago.

Northern Bypass Road

Bamaga Road and Bypass Roads were fairly good, but had had some rain, and some parts were chopped a little.

Southern Bypass Road

In the southern end, Bramwell Junction Roadhouse is open, Bramwell Station will remain closed during the Wet Season.

Telegraph Road was mostly dry, but as elsewhere there were some wetter parts, and most dips had some water.

Archer River was low but running, and the stretch from Archer to Coen was mostly rainy and wet. South of Coen it gets not only hillier and bumpier, but also more wet.

It's wet and pot-holey between Port Stewart turnoff and Musgrave, and between Musgrave and Hann River Roadhouse is the worst and the wettest part.

Just south of the roadhouse is a sealed stretch through a floodway, and south of that is another wet, soggy bit (which had dried out a little by the time we were on our way back and the video was taken).

Roughly between Musgrave and Laura there were corrugations and potholes, rain and water on the road almost all the way.

Laura River was flowing and higher than on our last trip in January, and has apparently been up and down and over the bridge since.

The next crossing south, that sometimes gets flooded during the Wet - McLeod, is low, and so is the next one - Rifle Creek.

Cheap fuel station on Kennedy Highway (only one amongst all the money-saving tips in the Destination Guide)

Also the Portsmith fuel stations that I have been mentioning in the Destination Guide, have been replaced by Puma, but they are still worth mentioning for their cheap prices :-)

I have had plans on lots more caravanners and dog info, but now that we have just taken two puppies and will be travelling with them, there is no better time to start with the doggy part :-)

Molly my mate's dog on a trip in 2010.

I can see it to grow into a dog booklet as we will be finding lots more first hand detail, but for now I have put a dog chapter into the Destination Guide.

So if you are a dog owner and wonder about taking your dog/s to Cape York - even though the booklet might not get ready this season, the book chapter now gives you some good tips on how to work out where they are allowed and where they are not. There are exceptions even within national parks :-)

I really appreciate any kind of feedback on the Destination Guide. destination cape york
