Cape York News #025 - Ita Downgraded to Category Four, I am Safe in Cooktown Cyclone Shelter
April 11, 2014

Hi everyone,

Firstly - thanks a lot for the massive amount of replies I got to the last newsletter - it was lovely to see how many people care :-)

It was so many that I haven't had a chance to write the replies just yet.

Secondly - if you watched the news, you probably already know that Ita has been downgraded to a Cat Four which is great news!!

But what you don't know is that I decided to go to the cyclone shelter :-)

ITA CATEGORY FOUR AND ABOUT 100 KM NORTH EAST OF COOKTOWN

This is absolutely fantastic news!!

I so much don't want the whole place to look like a war zone!

But I am safe myself - in the Cooktown Cyclone Shelter - a relatively new building that is now going to be tested for a cyclone for the first time.

I feel it was a really good decision to come here despite the fact that we are going to be locked in here for 48 hours.

But I am glad to feel safe, we can still see the news from the TV (yeah we did also see the news about and from the shelter :-), and we can see out the window.

Right now what we can see is a lot of rain and strong winds, but unfortunately it's getting dark, so unfortunately I will not be able to film or take any photos of the action of this cyclone outside.

It is supposed to arrive late at night and make a lot of noise - which I will definitely record.

Category four makes this cyclone to sound a hell of a lot better, but in fact its winds are still 274km/h which is only 6km/h less than a cat five so it's still a very strong and destructive cyclone.

See how the shelter goes on its first test in a few hours :-)

FEEDBACK ALWAYS WELCOME

I really appreciate any kind of feedback on the Destination Guide.

Please let me know if you enjoyed it while planning before the trip, and while using the information once on the trip.

If you get any questions about anything, please feel welcome to contact me.

That's all for this time - happy planning everyone :-)

Katrin
