Cape York News #015 -- Cape Melville Open, Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival Great as Always
June 25, 2013

Hi everyone,

I just heard from Matt Muggeridge that Cape Melville is open.

Also, I don't often put event reports into newsletters, but I cannot help but report on Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival - the best event on the Peninsula, and the best Aboriginal event in Australia.

In This Issue

• Cape Melville Is Open

• Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival Was Great As Ever

• Guide Book Feedback Always Welcome

When researching the track conditions for the last newsletter, I got opposite answers on the conditions in Cape Melville and Starcke Wakooka Track.

Thanks Matt Muggeridge for replying with this:

We just returned from Cape Melville yesterday.

We drove the Starcke Wakooka track.

It was slow going, with an average of 20km/h.

It had been closed recently for back burning.

Happy travels!

This is early compared to the last year, when Cape Melville only opened in August.

The poor Wet Season we had this year, may yet help to open many other smaller tracks early.

I am just back from Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival and despite the fact that there is room for some improvement, it remains the greatest event on the Peninsula thanks to our Aboriginal culture.

It is easy to forget just how beautiful and rich it is, when you don't see it every day.

Our Aboriginal communities mean so much more than alcohol restrictions.

Most of our Aboriginal people live peacefully in their alcohol free communities and teach their children to dance and pass on their rich culture to the future generations.

This event is a great reminder - watch photos and videos on this new page about Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival - there is no better Aboriginal event in Australia.

I really appreciate any kind of feedback on the Destination Guide.

Please let me know if you enjoyed it while planning before the trip, and while using the information once on the trip.

If you get any questions about anything, please feel welcome to contact me.

That's all for this time - happy planning, and happy travelling if you are on the tracks!!

Have a great day :-)
