I have just digitised slides I took of the trip in 1982.
We could not plan on fuel any further north than Coen. We could not plan to get any at Bamaga nor Weipa. So we each carried lots of fuel for the old gas guzzlers. The Toyota had a 44 gallon drum of diesel on board.
We had to camp outside of Weipa as we were not allowed to stay in the town.
We only had to winch ourselves once and I think that was on the way home at Cockatoo Creek.
We used a 1 car ferry on the Jardine, but I have photos of a couple of vehicles crossing themselves. It was not very far west of the road crossing.
I was told at the time that there were no crocs at the road crossing, so I stood in the middle to take photos. I now recon that was the stupidest thing I even did!!
